Turntable Tonearm & Cartridge Resonance Calculator

Tonearm-Cartridge Resonance Formula

Mechanical resonance is governed by fr = 159.15 ÷ √((Marm + Mcart + Mscrews) × C10Hz). Target 8.0 to 12.0 Hz (with 9.0–11.0 Hz as the reference sweet spot) to isolate the stylus from 1–6 Hz record warps and footfalls while staying cleanly below 20 Hz musical sub-bass.

The Two Numbers From Your Spec Sheets

Quick Turntable Combos:

Straight from the arm spec sheet • Low ≤8g • Medium 9–15g • Heavy 16g+

From the cartridge spec sheet (1 µm/mN = 1 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne)

20 µm/mN is already a 10 Hz dynamic figure, so it converts 1:1.

Optional: cartridge weight & mounting hardware

Left at a typical 7.2g cartridge and 0.8g of steel screws unless you change them. Both feed the total effective mass.

Typically 5.0g to 10.5g

0.5g aluminum • 0.8–1.2g steel • 2–4g shim

9.18 Hz Resonance • Ideal Green Zone (8–12 Hz)
