Stylus Lifespan, Wear & Replacement Calculator

What Decides Stylus Life

A stylus is a wear item with a published service window: sapphire tips are often quoted near 100 hours, bonded conical and elliptical diamonds 300 to 500 hours, nude elliptical diamonds 600 to 1,000 hours, and fine-line profiles such as Shibata, line contact, MicroLine, and SAS 1,000 to 2,000 hours. Track your weekly listening hours against those windows and you get a replacement date, plus the point where a careful listener should start listening for wear.

What Shortens Stylus Life

  • Tracking force above spec: Every extra gram of downforce accelerates tip wear and record wear at the same time. Set it with a gauge rather than trusting the dial, and re-check it after changing cartridges or headshells.
  • Dirty records: Airborne grit embedded in the groove acts like grinding paste on a diamond. A carbon-fibre brush before every side and a wet clean on used records are the cheapest stylus insurance available.
  • Worn or warped vinyl: A rough groove surface and the extra cantilever motion over a warp both raise friction at the tip and shorten the interval between replacements.
  • Sapphire instead of diamond: Sapphire tips are common on entry ceramic cartridges and wear through far faster, which is why they are quoted near 100 hours rather than several hundred.
  • What does not shorten it: Idle hours. A stylus wears only while the tip is in a groove, so time spent on the shelf does not count against the estimate.
