2-Channel Stereo Speaker Placement & Toe-In Calculator

Quick Answer

Start with an equilateral 60° stereo triangle where the distance between your left and right speakers matches the distance from each speaker to your listening chair. Stagger your front-wall and side-wall clearances so they never match (preventing upper-bass SBIR dips), and angle the speakers inward by 10° to 18° so their axes cross just behind your head.

Rear ports require extra breathing room off the front wall

How to Dial In a Two-Channel Soundstage by Ear

Use the calculated coordinates above to place blue painter's tape at your left speaker, right speaker, and listening chair positions. Once the speakers are roughly placed, play a well-recorded mono or sparse vocal track:

  • Lock in the Phantom Center (Toe-In): If the lead vocalist sounds wide or diffuse across the wall, rotate both speakers inward by 2° increments until the voice locks into a tight point dead-center between the cabinets.
  • Tune Mid-Bass Weight (Front-Wall Distance): If upright bass or kick drums sound boomy and slow, pull the speakers 3 to 6 inches further out from the front wall. If bass feels lean, push them 2 to 4 inches closer.
  • Eliminate Early Comb Filtering: Place 2"–4" broadband acoustic panels at the side-wall first-reflection mirror points listed in the table above.
